Naseer Shamma (Monday 15/7/2002)

Born in the southeast Iraq in 1963, composer and oud virtuoso Naseer Shamma has mastered all the known forms of oud playing. At an early age, he received his first lessons in playing the instrument and became fascinated with musical sounds and rhythmic modes. He later graduated summa cum laude from the Baghdad Institute of Music Studies. His experience in music extends to the more modern forms of playing the oud, arranging musical works for symphony orchestras, playing with traditional small oriental music ensembles, appearances in musical festivals throughout the world, and scoring for distinguished Arab theatrical, cinematic and television productions.

Assisted by the Egyptian Opera House, he established Beit Al Oud Al Arabi (House of the Arab Oud), now the most important center for teaching the oud and breeding a new generation of accomplished instrumentalists. During his sojourn in Egypt, he formed “Oyoun”, an ensemble of eight young musicians, whose mission is refining Arab music.
