Sheikh Ahmad Jalmam and his Ensemble
(Monday 15/7/2002)

It was the love of sacred chanting that brought together the seven members of the Ensemble of Sheikh Ahmad Jalmam, now internationally acclaimed for its revival of Sufi chanting. This Tunisian muezzin, who enjoys a magnificent sonorous voice, was born in Bizerta in the mid-1960s.

By the age of 10 years, he had memorized the Quran and learnt how to recite its verses in mosques. As a young man, he joined several important traditional religious recitation groups and at the age of 30, he established his own ensemble. The ensemble specializes in Hizb Al-Lateef, a series of invocational texts praising the names and attributes of God. Its art is associated with the authentic tradition of muezzins and recites of the Holy Quran. So far, Sheikh Jalmam has published seven CDs.
