Presents
THE WORLD CULTURE FORUM 2005
Dead Sea, Jordan
[July 10, 2005] Amman, Jordan – The Middle East Center for
Culture and Development (MECCAD) -- in collaboration with the Ministry of
Planning and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of
Tourism and Antiquities, ISESCO, UNESCO, UNDP, WIPO, the Foreign Policy Center
in the UK, Cultural Engineering Dubai -- announces the second edition of the
World Culture Forum to take place on December 4-7, 2005 at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Center, Dead Sea, Jordan.
Organized under the theme of “Investing in Culture for Social
Justice and Development”, the World Culture Forum 2005 will address issues
related to the socioeconomic impact of culture on cultural enterprise
development, employment creation and conflict resolution. The Forum will not
only highlight the positive images of the rich and diverse aspects of the Arab
heritage, but also advocate for an open culture of dialogue and freedom of
expression that foster peace and stability in the region and the world.
Therefore, through plenary sessions, seminars, workshops and roundtables, the
program of the Forum will focus on culture and development theories and
practices, cultural rights as human rights, religion and culture, culture and
democracy, culture and women empowerment, arts in education, cultural tourism
and the future of festivals, culture and HIV/AIDS education, professional
development, cultural exchanges and diplomacy, as well as the valuation of
cultural assets and the sustainability of cultural institutions.
The participants are an international assembly of
policymakers, scholars, cultural entrepreneurs and managers, artists,
journalists and diverse professionals representing public and private
organizations and the institutions of the civil society. The World Culture Forum
2005 will coincide with the 5th edition of “Souk Ukaz; An International Cultural
Market in Amman” which will feature artistic activities, including fashion and
design, film, theatre, music and dance from different regions of the world.
The World Culture Forum was initiated in 2002 by Dr. Damien
Pwono who conceived it as a consultative process to stimulate creativity and to
mainstream culture in socioeconomic development; a program of action for the
development of cultural enterprises; and a global platform or convening where
representatives from the civil society, government and private sector interact
to address critical issues in the field of culture and development. The World
Culture Forum was inaugurated in 2004 by President Lula da Silva in Brazil. The
Brazilian Forum Cultural Mundial (Sao Paulo: 29 June to 4 July, 2004) attracted
thousands of participants from around the world and seeded the development of a
continued process for knowledge building and professional relationships
brokering. The organization of the second edition of this Forum at the Dead Sea,
Jordan, builds on the Brazilian experience and moves the conversation to focus
on the Arab region from where future strategies and the leave behind legacy of
the Forum, including the discussion of the idea of a Global Fund for Culture,
will be discussed.
MECCAD is a Jordanian based civil society organization
advocating for the mainstreaming of culture in the national development agenda
and the international development policy work.
